Magikal Thinking

Acrylic yarn, cotton backing | 52” x 40”

Magical thinking is the belief that your thoughts, actions, or rituals can influence unrelated outcomes. Wearing lucky socks. Knocking on wood.

Creating something beautiful and believing it will shift your internal state.

I’ve always struggled to access this. My brain is too literal, too tied to cause and effect.

I can’t trick myself into believing that tufting vibrant colors into a rug will pull me back into joy—even though I desperately want to.

But I’m trying anyway. This piece is an explosion of color and movement—swirling hair in blues, pinks, greens, golds.

A yellow flower tucked behind the ear like a talisman.

The face stays composed, almost detached, watching all that energy happen around her but not quite in it.

Maybe if I make enough brightness, some of it will stick. I know better.

But I’m doing it anyway, just in case magical thinking works after all.
